Ben Walmsley
The Ones Here Now
June 18 - 28  2008

The Ones Here Now is an exhibition of new works by Ben Walmsley. In these luminous portraits and figures of neighbourhood children, Walmsley depicts his subjects as creatures of light and colour.  Youth, like a firework, is a spectacular and fleeting event.  These children are here now, but their appearance is temporary.  These paintings capture the spark of youth, lending it substance and permanence through representation. They are ephemeral moments expressed in painterly terms.

Walmsley is known for creating paintings that combine masterful realism and vibrant abstraction.  Often, the fields and swatches of pure colour in his paintings are sampled from the painted image.  In this way he declares the artifice of his realism, and creates a dialogue between representation and abstraction.

Walmsley has exhibited in private and public galleries across Canada since 1983, and has work in major corporate collections and public galleries in Ontario.  He has spent the last 25 years happily painting and exhibiting, while being a stay at home father of four, and he knows intimately how quickly children grow up.
