I paint to capture everyday moments, those measures of time that for me are both narrative and celebratory. With a respect for the simplicity and authenticity of life in the Canadian North where I both studied with Ojibwe artists and spent several years teaching, comes Sweetgrass, a series that relates landscape to the human form, seeks stewardship of our earth, heralds the changing of the seasons and brings to the forefront an interest in migration. Thematically, I draw upon symbols that are representative of the rich Native traditions and cultures in order to create a collective narrative. Sweetgrass symbolizes strength and is an integral part of daily life, used for a multitude of different purposes from purification to basket weaving. Likewise, the circle is reflective of the powerful cycle of life and figures prominently in my work through the repeated use of pulsating circular patterns. I am also interested in issues that affect aboriginal society, such as the migration of caribou. I am concerned about what will happen to this totem animal and the peoples who rely on it as its land continues to be compromised. I am an Expressionist, using a dramatic and vibrant palette and layers of impasto that are pierced with incised lines until a grounding framework of shape and form emerges. My approach is influenced by the French artist Jean Dubuffet, the integral advocate for outsider art (Art Brut). I thus allow myself to follow a set of impulses via signs and symbols that reflect the joy of life. My paintings are stories of moments of hope, intertwined with cultural and personal archetypes.
