Not So Still Life

Artist Statement

Words are like a second language to me as I am predominantly a visual thinker.  I translate the pictures from my head into full-colour onto the canvas, which is aided greatly by listening to music, or more specifically, Jazz music.   I became an artist so that my obsessive painting would have an excuse. I have painted from a very early age, and thankfully it’s never left me. I consider myself a colourist who paints mainly interiors and still life.   I am fascinated by colour and light, and my end goal with a painting is to create depth on what would otherwise be nothing more than a 2 dimensional flat surface.   Exaggerating my chosen subjects with a dreamlike or surreal quality brings me never ending joy, especially when I find elements of the work that begin to jump towards the front of the canvas, seemingly detached from the background. This last characteristic, I think stems from my method of working. I will paint a canvas and leave it for a few days to work on another, returning to the first one to add features and adjust colours with a fresh sense of what is needed to complete the work
