The Shape of Memory Showing: April 7 - May 1, 2010 Marija Barac Jandric’s work comes from observing the natural world. In her new series of oil paintings titled The Shape of Memory, Jandric examines the relationship between memory and images of nature. Special interest is paid to the way in which the most elusive natural elements such as light, color, movement, and atmosphere, are tied to our deepest emotional experiences. Jandric applies layer upon layer of paint to her canvases, both transparent and opaque, with some shapes clearly defined while others are fused together or blurry. For her, this process mimics the way that memory is collected and deposited in our psyche. The resulting images evoke the feelings of a familiar place or a moment in time. BIO Marija Barac Jandric was born in Bosnia Herzegovina, moving to Canada in 1986. Marija graduated with honors from OCAD in 1996, she also holds a degree in Engineering from University of Zagreb, Croatia. Marija lives and works as a professional exhibiting artist, and art educator in Toronto.
