ARTISTS Sept 3 - 27 2008 Green: Two Sides Lie Within This green series of paintings reflects my sensibility and thoughts of nature. I create surfaces and marks from the reference of the rigidity of tree bark and the soft floral imagery. The juxtaposition of heavy, solid textures and the dream-like ecstatic imageries suggests the co-existence of two extremes in nature, and yet the symbiosis results in a harmony and calmness. I explore such a state of balance between the two sides of everything in our world through my paintings.
RED series Red is a dominant colour which figures tremendously in Chinese culture. It provides energy and is also a magical emblem of transcendence in mythology and spirituality. My pieces are therefore comprised primarily of red panels, with the brush strokes providing a variation of tones that bring this powerful colour to life. For the metallic accents, I destroyed, crumbled and rubbed metallic leaf, transferring and re-forming it on the surfaces. The glistening effect of metals was believed to carry extraordinary power in nature, thus I try to render the power of red by incorporating various intricate metallic tones to provoke an awe-inspiring visual experience. Although colour is integral to this series, I also apply mixed media through the use of the Chinese mythological prints that I have collected. After fragmenting the prints, I selected and re-ordered those fragments to construct new images. I enjoyed this decomposing and synthesizing process that allows renewal to take place. The new images are representations of tangible feelings and emotions. The trigger for this body of work was not only stemmed from my cultural heritage, but also from my fascination of Zen painting that grasps the mood of tranquility but leaves an intense visual impression to the viewers with its minimal composition. This series of artwork is not aimed at promoting any mythological, spiritual, or philosophical ideas, but to reflect a transcendent realm embedding the soul.
