ARTISTS Meredith Bingham Exhibition of new work - Oct 08 Artist Statement My paintings come from the intuitive, the irrational and the accidental in the creation of a work of art. The idea of building up and breaking down colour and form until it becomes recognizable to you and “feels” complete. Once it is finished I believe in letting the art stand on its own as an object of interest in its own right not as a representation of something else. The circle, which is the reoccurring shape in most of my work, is used because it is such a simple, true form and it symbolizes so many things; life cycles, futility, containment, security and completion. I work in two series simultaneously. In one series I like to under-paint, using layers so that the circles looks fleeting and subtle, as if caught out of the corner of one’s eye. In the other series the circles are bold, graphic and demanding. Working with both satisfies a need in me to be both delicate and accessible but also bold and aggressive.
