ARTISTS Intimate Strangers Intimate Strangers examines the isolation and resulting interconnectivity between a group of subjects. Photograph-sized portraits (5x7) of relative strangers/unrelated subjects are juxtaposed next to one another raising inquiry as to their individuality and their relevance as individuals and as a group. Working from digital photographs I took of various acquaintances, and using the maliable medium of oil and plaster on wood, I've created a gathering of individuals connected only by the artist and technology. The subjects were of varying degrees of acquaintanceship which contributed to the fluctuating representation of understanding of the subjects through their recreation. The maliable surfaces add a level of temporality inherent in the medium that was employed to create their likeness (digital photos).. Speaking to the temporality of the superficial relationships without discounting them. Their juxtaposition draws together an otherwise isolated group. Their individuality is explored in the context of their differences and commonalities that divide and unite us as people/beings. As within the temporary housing of our bodies we are drawn to one another. To studying each other. Judging levels of beauty or 'sameness'. Symmetry and palpable yearning to understand or know someone by their expression, posture and discernible temperament. To strive to intimately know an otherwise stranger.
